How to Position a Picture Light Correctly

The fitting should be mounted 50-100mm above the top edge of the frame. This places the arm in line with the top of the artwork so the shade directs light at a consistent 30-45 degree downward angle across the full canvas.

  • Fitting width should be 50-70% of the canvas width for even coverage
  • A 100cm wide canvas suits a picture light of 60-70cm arm span
  • Small canvases under 50cm wide suit compact single-lamp picture lights

LED vs Halogen Picture Lights

Older picture lights used tungsten halogen lamps at 20-50W. These produce warm, accurate colour rendering but generate heat that, over time, causes canvas and oil paint to dry out and crack.

LED picture lights now match halogen colour rendering at CRI 90+ while running at 4-8W (90% less energy) and producing negligible heat. For valuable artwork, oil paintings, or works on paper, LED is the only appropriate choice.

Colour temperature: 2,700-3,000K for warm-toned artwork (oils, portraits, warm interiors). 3,000-3,500K for neutral-toned artwork (black and white photography, contemporary abstract).

Mains vs Battery Picture Lights

  • Mains-wired: Hardwired to a fused spur or switched from a socket. Cleanest installation. Continuous operation without battery replacement.
  • Battery-powered: No wiring required. The battery box (usually 3-4 AA batteries) is concealed behind the frame or above the fitting. LED battery picture lights typically run 100-200 hours per set of batteries at standard brightness.

For valuable artwork or permanent installations, mains is the right choice. For rental properties or temporary exhibitions, battery is the practical option.
